Senate body protests over non-construction of Western route of CPEC

ISLAMABAD: Senate standing committee on Communication has lodged strong protest over non- construction of Western route of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
The meeting was presided over by Senator Daud Khan Achakzai. It alleged that NHA officers have been fooling the committee members from the last four years. Top officials told the committee that Rs 65 billion have been allocated for construction of Western route of CPEC while Rs 86 billion have been earmarked for purchase of lands.

The committee said that Chinese government would be taken into confidence during construction of Western route while a high-level delegation will be leaving for China during the next week. Secretary Communication and the Minister briefed the committee about construction of Western route. The committee also rejected report regarding the Western router and ordered to present a report based on facts.  

Committee members regretted that officers were befooling them by hiding the truth and facts. They said they have had been hearing about the launching of construction work on the Western route but no work has been started yet. The committee said that officials have not spent Rs 50 billion allocated for purchase of land.

Chairman of the Committee warned to move privilege motion against NHA officials. He added when there was no land purchased how construction could be started. He said federal government has not released funds for Balochistan development. He said engineers recruited on contract have no degrees.

It was revealed that Malaysian citizens were recruited as consultants on heavy pays for projects in Balochistan and they were being paid Rs 1.8 m and their accommodations are in Islamabad and offices are in Quetta.
